Pioneering role
Bilingual education meets the requirements of a globalised world. The bilingual education programmes at Freies Gymnasium Zürich have been developed with this in mind. In the year 2000, Freies Gymnasium Zürich was the first school in the Canton of Zurich to offer a bilingual Progymnasium, in collaboration with the Lakeside School in Küsnacht. Furthermore, Freies Gymnasium Zürich has carried out pioneering work in bilingual education by offering students the opportunity to choose a bilingual study programme in the upper school of the Gymnasium.

From Kindergarten to Swiss Matura
This means that, together with the Lakeside School in Küsnacht, Freies Gymnasium Zürich can offer truly bilingual education from Kindergarten right through to Matura. Teaching is in accordance with the immersion principle with equal amounts of German and English. Good knowledge of both English and German is required for entrance since German and English lessons are conducted at mother-tongue level. This distinguishes our programme from that of other schools.

Integration
A bilingual education prepares students for international networking in studies and career. For young people with an international background, a bilingual education does not just offer language advantages but also the chance to become integrated in Switzerland, both socially and culturally.

* Preparatory Class 1 following grade 5 of the primary school (6th and 7th school year)
* Preparatory Class 2 following grade 6 of the primary school (7th school year)
* Progymnasium: monolingual or bilingual (7th and 8th school year)
* Lower School of the Gymnasium: monolingual or bilingual (7th to 12th school year)
* Upper School of the Gymnasium: monolingual or bilingual (9th to 7th school year)

Institut Montana Zugerberg is a non-profit, swiss and international co-ed day- and boarding school. It was founded in 1926 and is comprised of an International Section as well as a Swiss Section.
The International Section’s purpose is to provide an education to prepare students for university entrance. It is a recognized IB World School and our students have entered universities in numerous countries including the UK, the USA, Canada, and Switzerland.

The Swiss Section prepares its students for entrance to Swiss universities. All Swiss universities have very high standards and are considered world class.

Since some students are beginners in English and in German, there are special courses tailored to their needs (English as a Foreign Language and German as a Foreign Language).

The class sizes range from six to fifteen students, and the teacher student rate is 1 to 6. All teachers of the International Section are fluent in English and most are native speakers.

We require that all teachers hold a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and many have earned a Master’s or a doctorate.

The Swiss Section teachers hold degrees from German and Swiss universities, and have the equivalent of either a Master’s or a doctorate and an educational degree. In both sections the average teacher has more than seven years teaching experience and stays in average eight years at Montana.

Currently 270 students are enrolled and our student body comes from all around the world. This diversity is best illustrated by the fact that all five continents are represented and our students come from more than 36 different countries.
